The SUS na Floresta (SUS in the Forest) initiative, carried out by the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS), seeks to expand access to Primary Health Care (PHC) for riverside populations through digital health and the strengthening of in-person assistance. The project covers 78 communities in the Amazonian municipalities of Carauari, Itapiranga, Novo Aripuanã, and Uarini.

The proposal includes the installation of five Health Support Points and a lodging facility for healthcare teams in strategic areas of the forest, offering in-person consultations, medical and nursing teleconsultations, and dental care. The initiative also includes training for SUS professionals in telehealth and technical consulting for the Municipal Health Secretariats.

In 2025, the project advanced with the acquisition of 100% of the information and communication technology equipment and 80% of the planned furniture and other equipment. The bidding processes were also initiated to hire the companies responsible for the construction of the future telehealth hubs. In addition, two consultants were hired to conduct a diagnosis of existing digital health initiatives and the specific characteristics of PHC in each municipality.

Outcome

Construction of five telehealth hubs and one lodging facility at strategic locations within the Amazon rainforest, telehealth training for 50 SUS professionals, and the delivery of at least 240 teleconsultations and 180 dental care visits by the end of the project.
