Primary Health Care (APS) is considered the main entry point for the population into the Unified Health System (SUS) and can meet 80% to 90% of an individual’s lifetime health needs, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Given the importance of this level of care and its current challenges, Artemisia and Umane strengthened their partnership through the Open Innovation Platform in Primary Health Care, aimed at testing and disseminating technology-based solutions to improve access, organization, and quality of health services offered to the population. In its second cycle, the platform funded four pilot projects selected from 155 applicants and serves as a replicable collaboration model between the public and private sectors.
The pilot projects received a total investment of R$ 400,000 to verify applicability, field effectiveness, and scalability potential. Implementation occurred between May 2023 and March 2024, generating insights that contributed to improved interfaces and the identification of new opportunities for the tools. In addition to funding, Artemisia, Umane, and the social enterprises followed the implementation of the solutions in local territories, supported the training of health professionals, and assisted in the engagement with municipal health departments.
Entrepreneurs developing solutions aligned with the needs of health managers and impact-driven startups working more closely with public health systems.

“There is a gap between the public sector and impact-driven entrepreneurs working in health. For entrepreneurs, the challenges include hiring difficulties, slow bureaucratic processes, and the need for prior validation of the solution. For public managers, the main issue is that solutions do not fully meet their demands and that entrepreneurs often lack a systemic understanding of public-sector challenges. Considering this scenario, Artemisia sought the best solutions in the field to refine and implement them in practice. Part of this joint effort is reflected in the Open Innovation Platform we built and in the Impact Thesis; these are key components of a shared vision we are committed to developing together.”
